ActOne Series, Volume XV
Actors wanted!

The AOS was developed to provide a venue and a voice to writers. Once the pieces are selected, playwrights will have the opportunity to work with a dramaturg to hone their script before it goes into production, and to observe some of the rehearsals. The process culminates in two evenings of performances, when the writers get the opportunity to see their works come to life, local actors show their stuff on stage and the San Antonio community gets the opportunity to celebrate the work of their neighbors, friends and promising new theatre voices.

Ashley Lindstrom-The Current:
“…the towering, expressive Bouier, recounts Levee’s tragedy with his entire voice and body…”

In a Chicago based recording studio, Ma Rainey’s band players, Cutler, Toledo, Slow Drag, and Levee turn up to record a new album of her songs. As they wait for her to arrive they banter, tell stories, joke, philosophize and argue. As the play unfolds it becomes clear that the tension is between the young hot-headed trumpeter Levee who has dreams of having his own band and veteran players Cutler and Toledo.

By the time Ma Rainey does turn up in full regalia and entourage in tow the recording schedule is badly behind, throwing the white producers Sturdyvant and Irvin into more and more irate disarray. Ma’s insistence that her stuttering nephew Sylvester should do the voice intro to the title song causes more havoc.
As the band waits for various technical problems to be resolved the conflict between Levee and Cutler reaches a boiling point.

Come enjoy an evening of short one-act plays written by local &

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
by August Wilson
Directed by – Antoinette Winstead
February 5-21, 2010
It’s 1927 in a rundown studio in Chicago where Ma Rainey is recording new sides of old favorites. More goes down in the session than music in this riveting portrayal of rage, racism, the self hate and exploitation.

Rumors
by Neil Simon
Director – TBA
July 9-25- 2010
At a large, tastefully appointed Sneden’s Landing townhouse, the Deputy Mayor of New York has just shot himself. Though only a flesh wound, four couples are about to experience a severe attack of Farce. Gathering for their tenth wedding anniversary, the host lies bleeding in the other room and his wife is nowhere in sight. His lawyer, Ken and wife Chris must get “the story” straight before the other guests arrive.
As the confusions and mis-communications mount, the evening spins off into classic farcical hilarity.
