San Antonio Express News review of ‘Fabulation, or the Re-education of Undine’

The swiftness of Undine Barnes Calles’ fall is captured in the settings for the first act of “Fabulation, or the Re-education of Undine.”

In four quick scenes, the high-powered PR executive moves from her office and penthouse to her parents’ apartment in the projects. How did it happen? She fell under the spell of a handsome (and, alas, sticky-fingered) gentleman (played by John Martin Fitzhugh) who, after a brief marriage that earned him a green card, absconded with all of her money. That betrayal sends Undine back to the home she left nearly 20 years earlier, where one indignity after another awaits her.

Lynn Nottage’s dark satire is in good hands with the Renaissance Guild and director Antoinette Winstead, who finds just the right tone for the piece. It’s funny throughout, and, given the current economic crisis, sometimes uncomfortably resonant. Undine’s frustrating day waiting at a welfare office — she doesn’t have the right paperwork, can’t get her questions answered and is eventually physically removed — is just one example.

Winstead has cast the show well, starting with Jenelva Carter as Undine. The success of the show hinges on her — she never leaves the stage, and frequently steps out of the action to comment on it. Carter captures Undine’s bewilderment at what has happened to her without relinquishing her arrogance — she has gotten used to getting what she wants when she wants it, and has no patience with a social-services timeline. The scene in which she tries to give a drug dealer (well-played by Charles Riley) customer service advice — “If you treat your customers with respect, they’ll give you a little respect in return” — is a case in point.

The supporting players, who all play several roles, also do a fine job, though two stand out. Stephanie Hicks is a reliably strong presence, ably stepping into the personas of a prostitute, Undine’s mother and a snooty friend who won’t risk her social standing by openly helping Undine. And Angela Bennett, who recently moved back to San Antonio from Los Angeles, is sensational as Undine’s weary, heroin-addicted grandmother and the prostitute who confronts Undine after they wind up sharing a holding cell.

Thank you for your interest and support!
