Crimes of the Heart Cast & Crew Bios

The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital.
Lenny is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach.

Their troubles, grave and yet, somehow, hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her.

SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS

‘Crimes’ sweetened with love, humor
Sisters’ shared history not all dark and gloomy
BY DEBORAH MARTIN
dlmartin@express-news.net

The past weighs heavily on the Magrath sisters, the troubled women who reunite in “Crimes of the Heart.”

They’ve never gotten past their mother’s suicide when they were children, and that event has shaped who they are as adults and how they relate to each other.

That sense of shared history swirls all around the Renaissance Guild staging, directed with grace by Diane Malone. Nearly every exchange is underscored by long-simmering hurts and resentments-eldest sister Lenny (Angela Bennett) is still angry that middle sister Meg (Michelle Burnett) received preferential treatment when they were kids, and Babe (Vanessa White) still behaves like the child she was when her mother hung herself.

That makes it sound much heavier than it is. The darker elements are leavened by the kind of humor that comes from people who know each other well. It’s also balanced by Danielle King’s terrific comic turn as Chick, the sisters’ cousin; by the bittersweet flirtation between Meg and Doc Porter (John Martin Fitzhugh), the man whose life sue supposedly wrecked years ago; and the tenderness between Babe and her attorney Barnette Lloyd (the charismatic Garfield Swaby).

The show is tart and sweet, and deeply satisfying.

The Renaissance Guild’s 8th Season Closes With A Heart-Felt Play
By Lee Hurtado

Beth Henley’s Crimes of the Heart is probably best known as a 1986 film, but The Renaissance Guild’s production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play – the final production of the Guild’s eighth season – is a success in its own right.

The play, set in Hazelhurst, Mississippi in 1974, covers one day in the lives of the Magrath sisters. Lenny (Angela Bennett), the oldest, struggles with her age, her family responsibilities, and her own emotional needs; Meg (Michelle Burnett) has left the family and her hometown in search of fame and fortune; Babe (Vanessa White), the youngest, has been accused of a shocking act of violence. As the sisters reunite, buried memories resurface, secrets of Hazelhurst society are revealed, and the Magrath women are forced to reevaluate their own lives.

Despite the seriousness of the subject matter, the play maintains its humor and emotion throughout, thanks to a strong cast (which also includes John Martin Fitzhugh, Danielle King, and Garfield Swaby. The set design also helps bring the story to life.

In her notes, director Diane Malone observes that the play’s tragedies and scandals “are not enough to subdue the spirit of the Magrath sisters.” And with its enthusiastic cast and crew, Crimes of the Heart is a truly spirited production.

Crimes of the Heart is playing at the Jump-Start Theatre: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 8 pm and Sunday matinees at 4 pm through July 26; for more information or to make a reservation, visit www.therenaissanceguild.org, call 210.656.0349, or send an email to shows@therenaissanceguild.org
