The Renaissance Guild, founded in January of 2001 by Latrelle Bright, Danielle King and Paul Riddle, Jr., is a non-profit organization dedicated to the examination, preservation, and celebration of the Black experience through theatre; providing educational outreach programs to the San Antonio community and surrounding areas, and providing opportunities for artistic expression to people of color.
We accomplish these goals through our challenging, diverse and innovative productions featuring traditional plays with non-traditional casting (Betrayal, Godspell, The Magic Act, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Lysistrata, Steel Magnolias), spotlighting works with powerful social themes (Bee-Luther-Hatchee, Blessed Assurance, The Left Hand Singing, Southern Cross, In the Blood, Frankenstein, Fences) and uplifting Black theatre voices (Spell #7, Riff-Raff, In the Blood, From the Wilderness to the Promised Land, Somebody Else’s Life, A Raisin in the Sun).
We believe that the Black experience reaches far beyond the boundaries of the subject of oppression. The themes of our productions focus not only on our struggle as Black people in America, but also on our everyday experience as people. The Black experience is shared; therefore, TRG’s doors are open to people of all ethnicities who desire to bring this mission to fruition.
